Third Network Lifecycle Service Orchestration in Action at MEF16

Infinera will demonstrate the Xceed Software Suite, an open, software-defined networking (SDN) solution for network operators deploying programmable optical transport networks, at the MEF16 Proof of Concept Showcase  in Baltimore November 7-9. The demonstration includes MEF-compliant Lifecycle Service Orchestration (LSO) and on-demand Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) Carrier Ethernet 2.0 (CE2.0) service creation using MEF 55 LSO application programming interfaces (APIs) to control next-generation SDN-enabled packet-optical networks using the Xceed Software Suite.

As the digital economy drives enterprises to adopt cloud-based architectures, they are pushing network service providers to rapidly deliver new services that connect businesses and consumers around the world. To meet these new demands, service providers are rethinking network architectures to accommodate the shift to SDN.  Network operators increasingly prefer open software to enable new services because it accelerates service innovation while simplifying operations. Standards-based solutions like MEF 55 are key to making this happen.

One of the objectives of MEF 55 is to simplify and automate the provisioning of standardized services across multi-carrier networks. This is important since no carrier has a footprint covering the entire globe, yet they need to respond to customer requests for connectivity wherever it arises. By defining the interfaces for inter-carrier communication of the service lifecycle, automation and simplification are enabled, potentially reducing the time to provision new standardized services across carriers to minutes instead of months.

At the MEF16 showcase we will demonstrate control of an Infinera XTM Series network built with EMXP IIE packet-optical transport switches to provide MEF CE2.0 services using new MEF LSO APIs. The range of EMXP II and EMXP IIE packet-optical transport switches is CE2.0-certified, and this certification has recently been extended with CE2.0 100 gigabit per second (Gb/s) certification of the EMXP III. The EMXP III, which is the main switching unit within the PT-Fabric, provides high-capacity terabit-level switching for packet-optical networks.
